Negative taken of group of female students on steps of building at the Colored Industrial Institute in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. In 1889, the Colored Industrial Institute (called St. Peter's Catholic School after 1916) opened in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. Monsignor John M. Lucey was the driving force behind the establishment of Saint Peter's School. The school was located near Jones' Park on State Street between 15th and 16th Avenues. The school was staffed by the Sisters of Charity from Nazareth, Kentucky from 1889-1901; the Sisters of the Holy Family from New Orleans, Louisiana from 1901-1909; the Sisters of the Holy Ghost and Mary Immaculate from San Antonio, Texas from 1913-1927; and the Sisters of the Holy Spirit from Techny, Illinois from 1927 until the school closed in 1975. The school reopened as an elementary school staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame from Dallas, Texas in 1984. The women are sitting on the steps of the first academy building at the Colored Industrial Institute, which was a two-story wooden structure built in 1889.
